Our local sustainable development plan for Pierrefonds-Roxboro
Ten (10) actions being taken by the éco-quartier
1. Participate in the project planned to green the most problematic urban heat islands in our borough.
2. Give owners of shoreline properties, especially near Gouin Boulevard, incentives to green their property walls.
3. Educate and encourage borough citizens to take part in urban agriculture.
4. Promote urban agriculture in schoolyards, with the goal being the planting of a new vegetable garden every 2 years.
5. Participate in awareness campaigns for conserving potable water by organising two activities per year.
6. Educate and convince citizens to ecologically manage their rain water (ex: by using rain barrels to collect rain water).
7. Participate in the distribution of home composters with a goal of distributing 100 per year.
8. Continue holding drop-offs, and increase the quantity of household hazardous waste being collected.
9. Educate the public on the benefits of trees in an urban environment and distribute seedlings of trees indigenous to our region.
10. Pursue and expand the public shoreline cleanup program.

Closed during the holidays
The éco-quartier will be closed during the holidays from December 19 until January 8 inclusively. See you next year!
Christmas tree collection
There will be two days for the collection of Christmas trees, Wednesdays the 4 and 11 of January, 2012. Trees must be placed at the curb early in the morning on collection days.

Events at the Biosphere
The biosphere has organised a couple of events throughout the holiday season to inform visitors on how to celebrate in an eco-friendly manner. We invite you to check the schedule of events on their website and participate in as many as possible.
Arts and Crafts with Corks
Two classes of students from Lalande elementary visited the éco-quartier on November 22nd to participate in an arts and crafts workshop where they were taught about reusing cork in art projects.

Green Residue Collection
The last green residue collection will take place on Wednesday November 23rd, Pierrefonds-Roxboro citizens are invited to come by our office for a couple of free transparent bags to help with this collection.
Petition: The state of urban agriculture in Montreal
The "Groupe de Travail en Agriculture" (GTAU) announced yesterday that 25 082 Montrealers signed their petition requesting a public consultation on the state of urban agriculture in Montreal. We would like to thank all those that participated in this petition.

3RV Workshop
A 5@7 Workhop will be available at the éco-quartier Wednesday October 19 on the subject of reducing your household waste and reusing common objects and materials. For housekeepers, homemakers and their families living in Pierrefonds-Roxboro. Remember that reducing, reusing, recycling and valorising are also good ways to save money. Please confirm your presence by telephone or by e-mail. Flower bulbs will be given out to all participants of this evening event.
Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC)
We would like to thank all the participants that took place in this year's shoreline cleanup. We had 62 enthousiastic and hard working volunteers this year and picked up a ton of grabage!

Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup (GCSC)
The éco-quartier Pierrefonds-Roxboro and SOS Planète will again be organising the cleanup of the Rivière-à-l'Orme on Saturday September 24, 2011 from 10AM to 2PM, if you would like to take part, please contact us and let us know, you can also sign up for the event on the GCSC website.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) drop-off
Saturday July 30, 2011 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at 13795 Boulevard de Pierrefonds in the fire station's parking lot.
The green patrol in collaboration with the éco-quartier Pierrefonds-Roxboro, GEEP (Global Electric Electronic Processing), the CRE of Montreal and the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro, invite you to bring your "portable" (no larger than one square foot) ICT waste to be recycled.
Larger objects must be brought to an ecocentre.
Don't forget that ICTs are considered hazardous waste and should never be put out with your regular garbage pickup.

Environmental awareness day at Cap St-Jacques beach
Sunday July 17 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Cap St-Jacques beach the éco-quartier Pierrefonds-Roxboro and the West Island Green Patrol will be participating in the annual Family day.

The Green Patrol 2011
We would like to welcome and introduce Joany and Skander, our two green patrollers for this summer; they will be patrolling our borough from June 4th until August 5th. Their goal is to spread the word about environmental solutions to challenges regarding water usage, household hazardous waste and ecologically friendly gardening, amongst many other topics.

St-Jean and Canada Day
Please take note of changes to the éco-quartier's schedule for the next few weeks, we will be closed on June 24th and 25th and on July 1st and 2nd, we will be open on Monday June 27th and on Monday July 4th from 10am to 3pm. The rest of the schedule remains as usual.
The Yellow Pages
With the ubiquity of the internet, many people no longer refer to the yellow pages reference that is delivered to homes and offices every year. If you are one of those people that would no longer like to have the yellow pages delivered to your door, you can opt out on their unsubscribe website. Important upcoming event: The Pierrefonds-Roxboro Ecological gardening day will take place rain or shine, on Saturday, June 4, 2011, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., at Riverdale high school-park, 5060 boulevard des Sources. Annuals, perennials, compost, wood chips, tree seedlings and vegetable plants for kids will be distributed free of charge, with proof of residency (while quantities last). See the poster and pictures below for further information.

The Blue Patrol 2011
The blue patrol is our water awareness team that informs the public on water consumption and conservation recently began their season which spans from May 14th until June 4th throughout the West Island.
The cities and boroughs in which they will be informing citizens are Pierrefonds-Roxboro, Ste-Geneviève-Île Bizard, Kirkland, Beaconsfield, Dorval, Dollard-des-Ormeaux and Pointe-Claire.
The Patrol will be visiting neighbourhoods that have more evident water concerns, they will do mini water-audits in some public institutions, they will be doing some door to door awareness visits and setup kiosks to promote water conservation and rain barrels to citizens across the West Island.
We wish the blue patrol a great awareness season!


We would like to thank all the volunteers that participated in our large clean-up on Rue Commercial Centre in Roxboro and on Gouin Boulevard, on Saturday April 30th, we would especially like to thank the 803 North Shore Sabre Squadron Air Cadets and CJAD Radio Station for their support.

Earth Day 2011
The éco-quartier will be closed from Friday April 22 to Monday April 25 inclusively for Easter weekend.
Coming up: April 30, 2011 - The éco-quartier Pierrefonds-Roxboro will be organising a large clean-up on Rue Commercial Centre in Roxboro and on Gouin Boulevard, on Saturday April 30th from 10AM until 3PM. Many prizes and gifts will be raffled off to participants, beverages and sandwiches will be available to all. Please confirm your plans to attend.
We are looking for candidates to work with us this summer as blue patrollers and/or green patrollers or as student gardeners. If you are interested please read the job descriptions for the blue patrol and the green patrol and send your CV to: ecoquartier.pfds.rox@gmail.com.

Our kiosks for international water day were a huge success. We distributed more than 500 flyers and many people showed a lot of interest in our star water conservation products, notably the garden rain meters, toilet tank banks, and shower coaches.

HAPPY WORLD WATER DAY
Come see us at our water conservation kiosks this week at Metro (3801 boul St-Charles) on wednesday March 23 from 3pm to 6pm and at Super C (11851 boul Pierrefonds) on Saturday March 26 from 10am to 2pm. We will be offering tips and tricks on how to reduce your potable water wastage as well as showing off our kits containing hard to find products that can help you reduce your water wastage.

Natural Christmas tree collection: Trees must be placed close to the street between 8PM the night before and 7AM the day of the collection (Wednesdays january 5th and 12th). To ensure Pickup, trees must be free of all decorations. You can also bring trees to the chalet at one of our parks. They will be used around the rinks to protect skaters from the wind.

Recycling pickup will take place as usual during the holiday season. Please be patient as pickup times may vary.
The Christmas tree pickup will take place Wednesdays January 5th and 12th, 2011.

If you are a business in the borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro that does not yet have a recycling program, we invite you to contact RCI Environnement at 514-352-2025, they can set you up with a regular recycling pickup that satisfies your needs.
The éco-quartier is looking for volunteers to help in making cork boards on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays during our opening hours. If you like doing arts and crafts and are interested in helping out, please contact us.
